Washington, DC, November 30, 2011 - Pending home sales rose strongly in October and remain above year-ago levels, according to the National Association of Realtors®. The Pending Home Sales Index,* a forward-looking indicator based on contract signings, surged 10.4 percent to 93.3 in October from 84.5 in September and is 9.2 percent above October 2010 when it stood at 85.5. The homeownership rate in the third quarter 2011 (66.3 percent) was lower than the third quarter 2010 rate (66.9 percent). The homeownership rates in the Midwest and South were lower than their corresponding third quarter 2010 rates.
New home sales
Privately-owned housing starts in November 2011 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 685,000. This is 9.3 percent (+/- 13.1%)* above the revised October 2011 estimate of 627,000.
